Redefining PLA For Durable Applications Is Now Possible With Floreon's Technology

Dr Andrew Gill Of Floreon Presenting at The European Bioplastics Conference 2024

We’re thrilled to share highlights from the recent presentation by Dr. Andrew Gill of Floreon, who was a speaker at the prestigious European Bioplastics Conference on 11th December 2024. To download our EBC pdf presentation click on the link below.

Dr. Gill’s insightful talk showcased the incredible advancements in Floreon’s durable PLA formulations. He highlighted how these materials combine durability, flame retardancy, a low carbon footprint, and the unique ability to be chemically recycled into virgin-quality polymer—paving the way for a more sustainable future in bioplastics.

PLA, From Fragile to Tough

Conventional PLA struggles to meet the performance requirements for long-lasting applications. Floreon Therma-Tech's innovative formulation overcomes these challenges by dramatically enhancing impact resistance, thermal stability, and fire-retardant properties.

For example, Floreon Therma-Tech has surpassed benchmarks for demanding uses such as automotive components, construction materials, and modular systems like Morph Bricks.

Meeting Fire Resistance Standards with Floreon Materials

Floreon materials are rigorously tested to meet key fire resistance standards, ensuring safety and reliability in demanding applications. These tests include:

  • UL94V for flammability rating, Limiting Oxygen Index (LOI) for combustion properties

  • Glow Wire Flammability Index for electrical safety

  • Cone Calorimetry for heat release and burning behaviour

By excelling in these benchmarks, Floreon Therma-Tech demonstrates its commitment to delivering high-performance, flame-retardant sustainable solutions.

Sustainability in a Circular Economy

Dr. Gill also emphasised that the recycling of flame retarded plastics presents a very

significant challenge today. The chemical recycling of PLA allows flame retardant to be

filtered out, leading to regeneration of virgin polymer.

Our pilot study demonstrated near 100% recovery of lactic acid from the material through a short and energy efficient process. This circular approach not only addresses end-of-life concerns but also strengthens the case for PLA as a sustainable alternative to fossil-based plastics.

Floreon is paving the way for PLA to transition from short-lived applications to a future of engineering-grade performance. These advancements showcase how Floreon bioplastics can achieve durability while remaining environmentally friendly.
